Pet Wellness Exam

Pet Wellness CareThe veterinary team at Silverado Veterinary Hospital believes that prevention is the key to your pet's long term health. Routine wellness exams, vaccinations, regular lab work, deworming and fecal checks, as well as a sensible regimen of medications to prevent heartworm, fleas and ticks, will not only keep your pet well but will also minimize the cost of healthcare.
The first priority in our approach is the wellness exam. These visits are our chance to get to know your pet, to assess your pet's overall health, discuss any changes we see, educate and update you on advancements in veterinary care, and for you to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.
During your pet's wellness exam, we will:
  • Examine your pet's teeth, throat, and oral cavity
  • Check your pet's vision and examine the eyes
  • Examine the ears for infection, ear mites, allergic reaction and other related health issues
  • Examine the respiratory system
  • Assess your pet's heart
  • Test your pet's reflexes
  • Palpate lymph nodes and abdomen
  • Inspect the skin
  • Palpate joints and muscles for arthritis and other orthopedic conditions
  • Test to evaluate the function of internal organs, blood, and other systems
Most of the tests we recommend can be done during your dog or cat's regular exam.

Avian and Reptile Exams

We believe that all pets deserve the opportunity to lead the happiest and healthiest life possible. This is why we offer medical care for exotic or pocket pets ? small mammals such as rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rats and mice.
Often, these animals' healthcare needs are quite unique and require a veterinary practice with the experience and expertise to provide them with the best and most appropriate care possible. For example, in the wild, many of these animals developed strategies to conceal illness or injuries as a survival technique. These tendencies continue in domestic exotic and pocket pets, which mean their medical problems often go unnoticed.
This is why we strongly recommend semi annual physical examinations to check for health, nutrition and husbandry-related conditions. With semi annual medical examinations, problems are often diagnosed before they become serious medical conditions.
After acquiring your new exotic or pocket pet, a complete examination by one of our  specialized veterinarians is also strongly recommended. The exam includes a thorough physical, nutrition consultation, disease screening and laboratory testing if necessary.

Nutrition and
Prescription Diets

We know how important a quality diet is to your pet's overall health. During your pet's comprehensive physical examination we evaluate his or her body condition and give recommendations. Some pets require special food to maintain optimum health, but all pets benefit from a balanced, healthful diet.
Silverado Veterinary Hospital has trained staff available to help you with nutritional challenges for your pet. We can also offer advice and provide information about diets that benefit specific medical conditions such as liver disease, bladder or kidney stones, renal failure, food allergies and other conditions.
Prescription diets we carry at SVH include Hills Science Diet, Hill's Prescription Diets and Royal Canin. Some specialty foods can be specially ordered.  To contact the
Food Order Line directly please call extension 1100.
